The Catholic reform group We are Church has told the BBC it welcomes the Pope's decision, saying that he has apparently realised that the world has become more complex and that he no longer has enough strength to deal with the position. The Roman Catholic Church needs a Pope who doesn't decide everything himself, but who delegates responsibility, the group said.
