Die KirchenVolksBewegung Wir sind Kirche appelliert anlässlich des elften Jahrestages der Wahl von Papst Franziskus sowohl an das gesamte Kirchenvolk wie auch an die Kirchenleitungen auf allen Ebenen, dem von Franziskus eingeleiteten, dringend notwendigen Reformkurs gegen alle Widerstände auch im Vatikan treu zu bleiben und diesen fortzuführen. In seiner Rede im Vorkonklave (Wortlaut) hatte Kardinal Bergoglio zu einer radikalen Neuorientierung der Kirche nach innen wie nach außen aufgerufen. Diesen radikalen Richtungswechsel, für den er von den Kardinälen gewählt worden ist, erleben wir derzeit in seinen Anfängen.

In den bisherigen elf Jahren seines Pontifikats hat Papst Franziskus die römisch-katholische Weltkirche wieder auf den theologischen Kurs des Zweiten Vatikanischen Konzils gebracht, den seine beiden Vorgänger in sträflicher Weise verlassen hatten. Dieser dringend notwendige Reformkurs, zu dem im Besonderen auch der von Franziskus angestoßene weltweite Synodale Prozess 2021 bis 2024 gehört, muss ohne Wenn und Aber weitergeführt werden, damit er unumkehrbar wird. 

Wiedereinübung von Synodalität

Die derzeitige aggressive Polarisierung innerhalb der Kirche zeigt, wie wichtig die Wiedereinübung von Synodalität als kirchliche Lebens- und Leitungsform ist, die es in der frühen Kirche gab, die Papst Paul VI. 1965 nach dem Zweiten Vatikanischen Konzil für die Bischöfe aufgegriffen und die Papst Franziskus mit der Weltsynode 2021 bis 2024 auf das gesamte Kirchenvolk ausgeweitet hat.

Der Reformprozess von Papst Franziskus hat unsere Kirche bereits grundlegend verändert. Aber, die Kirchenkrise ist noch lange nicht überwunden und es gibt starke Widerstände gegen den Reformkurs von Papst Franziskus, wie sie früher nicht vorstellbar waren. Jetzt gilt es, diese Spannungen auszuhalten und Spaltungen zu überwinden, wenn unsere Kirche wahrhaft katholisch, das heißt umfassend, sein will.

Theologie und Kirchenrecht weiterentwickeln

Die Enthüllungen über geistliche und sexualisierte Gewalt und deren Vertuschung erschüttern die Glaubwürdigkeit der katholischen Kirche in immer mehr Ländern. Dies erfordert es, die systemischen Risiken anzugehen: den Missbrauch klerikaler Macht, die Unterordnung von Frauen und eine überholte Sexuallehre. Dies alles muss theologisch und kirchenrechtlich weiterentwickelt werden. Echte Teilhabe bedeutet: nicht nur beraten, sondern auch mitentscheiden! Und zwar auf allen Ebenen. Dabei müssen dezentrale Lösungen möglich werden.

Wie Franziskus sind wir der Auffassung, „dass wir nicht nur in einer Zeit der Veränderungen leben, sondern vielmehr in einer Zeitenwende, die neue und alte Fragen aufwirft, angesichts derer eine Auseinandersetzung berechtigt und notwendig ist“ (Brief an das pilgernde Volk Gottes in Deutschland, 29.6.2019).

On the occasion of the eleventh anniversary of the election of Pope Francis, the Church People's Movement We are Church appeals to the entire Church people as well as to the Church leaders at all levels to remain faithful to the urgently needed reform course initiated by Francis, even in the Vatican, against all resistance, and to continue this course. In his speech at the pre-conclave, Cardinal Bergoglio called for a radical reorientation of the Church, both internally and externally. This radical change of direction, for which he was elected by the cardinals, is currently in its infancy.

In the eleven years of his pontificate so far, Pope Francis has brought the Roman Catholic world church back onto the theological course of the Second Vatican Council, which his two predecessors had criminally abandoned. This urgently needed course of reform, which includes in particular the worldwide Synodal Process 2021 to 2024 initiated by Francis, must be continued without ifs and buts so that it becomes irreversible.

Re-establishing synodality

The current aggressive polarisation within the Church shows how important it is to re-establish synodality as a form of ecclesial life and leadership that existed in the early Church, which Pope Paul VI took up for the bishops in 1965 after the Second Vatican Council and which Pope Francis extended to the entire people of the Church with the 2021-2024 World Synod.

Pope Francis' reform process has already fundamentally changed our Church. However, the church crisis is far from over and there is strong resistance to Pope Francis' reform course that was previously unimaginable. It is now a matter of enduring these tensions and overcoming divisions if our Church wants to be truly Catholic, i.e. comprehensive.

Further developing theology and canon law

The revelations about spiritual and sexualised violence and its cover-up are shaking the credibility of the Catholic Church in more and more countries. This requires addressing the systemic risks: the abuse of clerical power, the subordination of women and outdated sexual doctrine. All of this must be further developed in terms of theology and canon law. Genuine participation means: not only consulting, but also co-deciding! And this at all levels. Decentralised solutions must be possible.

Like Francis, we are of the opinion "that we are not only living in a time of change, but rather in a turning point that raises new and old questions, in the face of which a debate is justified and necessary" (Letter to the Pilgrim People of God in Germany, 29 June 2019).
